Biographer Alleges Madonna Had 11 Abortions

Considering our obsession with celebrity sex scandals, it's not shocking that biographer Barbara Victor has come out with allegations that Madonna had 11 abortions.  It's not like Madonna ever denied heading to the clinic - she's admitted to having several abortions.  The scandal here is the number of abortions she allegedly had: 11.  I will admit here that I had 3 abortions.  I have no regrets and I doubt Madonna does either.

What's interesting is that even after giving birth to two biological children and adopting two others Madonna isn't immune from the abortion/slut stigma...even at the age of 52 it still follows her.  And, of course, the most damning statement is that Madonna used "abortion as a method of birth control".  We all know that that's the worst thing a woman can do.  Let me explain how a woman could rack up 11 abortions.

When you're in your 20s and 30s you're extremely fertile and prone to romance.  And we all know that when you're really into someone and fucking round the clock that reason yields to passion and you end up praying over an EPT stick.  Our culture pins responsiblity for the sex act on women because it's assumed that we can make rational decisions even when our hormones are in overdrive because women don't like sex.  Men aren't responsible for sex because it's assumed that men can't control their sexual impulses.  Picking up a box of condoms at the Kwik-E-Mart is much cheaper and much easier then getting fitted for a diaphram or getting a prescription for the pill.  And, for the record, some women love sex and want to fuck as much as men.

Each time I had an abortion it was because the guy who knocked me up was far from father material and I couldn't give up my dreams to become a mother to a child I wasn't ready to raise.  Madonna felt the same way:

You always have regrets when you make those kinds of decisions, but you have to look at your lifestyle and ask yourself: "Am I at a place in my life where I can devote a lot of time to being the really good parent I want to be?"

I think a woman's decision to put herself first before her fetus is what spurns Operation Rescue to target abortion providers for murder.  It's our society's severe condemnation of "loose" women that causes legislators to cave to the religious right and slowly erode our reproductive rights piece by piece.  Once you miss a period, you're supposed to give up everything for the genetic potential inside you.  And if you choose to abort then you're a heartless bitch who fucked for fun and doesn't want to own up to her responsibilities.

How could Madonna have become the icon she is today unless she put herself first - achieved her goals - and then welcomed motherhood?  It's a cruel joke that you're most likely to conceive at a time in your life when you don't have the ability to be a good parent.

These are never easy decisions to make - it takes a ton of self esteem and iron resolve.  Knowing that Madonna had 11 abortions only makes me respect her more.

Not really Pro-Choice.

I've only recently realized I wasn't completely pro-choice because I also had the "abortion as a method of birth control" accusation in my mind. It is tiring, this whole "slut culture". It's even worse when women receive judgements from healthcare providers. I know I've been made to feel like a slut AND a prude at the doctor's office. We're damned if we do and damned if we don't. Good points made in this post. Thank you for sharing your story with us.

Let's stop lumping all types of abortion into the same pile

Wouldn’t it help the debate if we stopped lumping all types of
abortion into the same pile? I’ll make a
guess that Madonna did not have 11 abortions that were past the first trimester.

When someone says abortion, the image is usually of a tiny
baby being killed to make life easier on the mom. The mental picture of a mom killing her baby
is very abhorrent, and therefore this image is used to push a certain view of
ALL abortions, regardless of the growth phase.

In the first eight weeks, it’s pretty hard to make a scientific
argument that the growth in the woman’s womb is a human with rights. Some religious dogma
dictates that when the sperm hits the egg, it’s a human with a soul. Well, keep
your religion to yourself. That’s just not a valid reason for a government law
disallowing a woman to cleanse her womb of an unwanted growth. We need a new word to describe this
process. The word abortion is too loaded.

At the other end of an unwanted pregnancy, only cognitive dissidence
would account for someone supporting a woman’s right to kill a third trimester unborn
infant, assuming her life is not in danger. A doctor actually has to kill a
viable human being at that point in the pregnancy.

So I guess I can’t be pro-life or pro-choice.

Carlin, I admire you for

Carlin, I admire you for being so honest about your abortions. I had one abortion and I decided not to tell anyone anymore about it because I am still shocked about how some so-called "friends" reacted and jugded me.
One "friend" called my parents to tell them and say how sorry she felt for me, another person outed me in front of a group and another one said abortion is only for teens, if you are over 25 it is not okay and another one told me I should give the "child" a name afterwards and to do a yearly funeral ritual. Can you believe it???!!!!!!!!! I was left speechless...
Now I feel very angry even only writing this and can only hope those people and anyone who makes stupid comments or judgements about madonna or anyone who has had an abortion will pay for it one day!
